Chilling out at Middle Joffre Lake

Today, we're heading to one of British Columbia's most breathtaking destinations—Joffre Lakes!

Get ready to experience crystal-clear turquoise waters, stunning mountain vistas, and an unforgettable hike through the heart of nature.

Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or love exploring beautiful places, this journey will inspire you. I am not the best at hiking; the hardest battle is just getting there. Then, I am motivated to get through the hike to stunning views of the mountains and the lakes.

Joffre Lakes is about a 3-hour drive from Vancouver, or you can stay in the closer hubs of Pemberton or Whistler. This is one of the most popular hikes in British Columbia, so be sure to get on the front foot with the admin!

You will need to go online to book a day pass, and they allow 500 visitors a day in the summer months. You will need to be organized and lucky.

I would label this hike moderate, with some steep parts as you go up, but it is worth it as you come across the three lakes at varying altitudes. I love exploring the local areas for hikes, and this one is a favorite of mine.

So, lace up your hiking boots, and let's dive into the natural beauty of Joffre Lakes!

Where is Joffre Lakes?

Joffre Lakes is a stunning natural area located in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Specifically, the lakes are situated in Joffre Lakes Provincial Park, which lies in the southern Coast Mountains, approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) east of the town of Pemberton and about 2.5 to 3 hours' drive north of Vancouver.

Joffre Lakes is accessible via the Duffey Lake Road (Highway 99), a scenic route that connects Pemberton to Lillooet. The trailhead for the Joffre Lakes hike is located just off this highway, making it relatively easy for visitors to find and access the park. The area is popular for hiking, photography, and nature viewing, drawing outdoor enthusiasts who come to experience its stunning alpine landscapes.

We stayed in Whistler the night before, so the journey to the parking lot wasn’t too long. If you are looking to do a day trip from Vancouver, then you will need to set that alarm pretty early to make sure you get there in good time and before the midday/early afternoon sun. Bear in mind that the parking lot can fill up, so be sure to get a space!

How to get a day pass.

The day passes are free, so let’s start with that good news.

Visitors to Joffre Lakes Park must book day-use trail passes. If you have a valid reservation for overnight camping, you do not need a day-use pass. Simply carry your reservation details with you throughout your stay. Each person requires a pass. You can book a maximum of four trail passes per transaction per day.

Passes are valid for arrival and departure at any time of day. The park will welcome a limit of 500 visitors per day. Limiting the number of visitors allows the park to rest and recover from years of overuse. It will also improve the visitor experience, providing solitude and enjoyment for hikers and campers.

Get your pass online two days before your visit, starting at 7 a.m. If there are no passes left, check back later. If someone cancels, passes might become available again.

Book passes through our day-use pass website. Your pass will be emailed to you, and you will need to present it when you arrive. Cell phone service is limited at the park, so download or print your pass before you arrive.

Passes cannot be transferred to another date, time, location, or person. If you can no longer use your pass, cancel it to make space for other visitors.

Trail overview

The trek to Joffre Lakes is a scenic and rewarding adventure that takes you through some of British Columbia's most stunning landscapes. The hike is approximately 10 kilometers (round trip) and typically takes around 4 to 5 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how much time you spend enjoying the views.

I would label this as a moderate hike, and I am not the best hiker in the world. The toughest part is between lakes 1 and 2; let’s break it down below.

1. Lower Joffre Lake

The trail begins with an easy, relatively flat path that leads you to the first of the three lakes, known as Lower Joffre Lake. This part of the hike is short and suitable for all ages and skill levels. The lake's serene setting, with its calm, reflective waters and surrounding forest, offers a tranquil start to the journey.

  • Tip: This is your last chance to get all the supplies you need for your hike, this is a short flat walk, but my word, what a great start, the lake views are awesome!

  • Thoughts: I loved this start to the hike; you won’t quite get the classic turquoise colors here as you are not an elevation to really see them but don’t let that deter you; this is a stunning start. This is great for anyone struggling with an injury or the older crew, as it is a short, flat walk with awesome views.

2. Middle Joffre Lake

The trek becomes more challenging as you ascend towards Middle Joffre Lake. The trail includes a series of switchbacks and a steady climb through dense forest. As you gain elevation, the path can become rocky and uneven, requiring a bit more effort and careful footing. Along the way, you'll encounter picturesque streams and small waterfalls.

  • Tip: Make sure you have top-quality hiking boots. Part of the trail becomes uneven, and you will need to let people pass who are coming down. This section will get your heart rate going!

  • Thoughts: The calfs worked on this section as little bits can be steep. There is a defined path, so do not climb on rocks or pull yourself up anywhere, but bear in mind people will be coming up and down. If you go up early, on the way down, you will pass the late starters, and going downhill can be tricky when passing people. However, saying all of that, the colors at the middle lake are breathtaking. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was giving me Moraine Lake vibes.

3. Upper Joffre Lake

The final ascent to Upper Joffre Lake is the most challenging part of the hike, with steeper sections and more rugged terrain. You'll pass by the impressive Holloway Falls and climb over rocks and roots. The effort is well worth it, as you'll be rewarded with a stunning view of the turquoise waters of Upper Joffre Lake, set against the backdrop of the Matier Glacier and towering peaks. The glacier's meltwater gives the lake its vibrant color, creating a surreal and breathtaking scene.

  • Tip: In your backpack, pack some lunch and a coffee to enjoy the views at the top. You can sit on the rocks and look out to the lake and Matier Glacier.

  • Thoughts: Wow! The hike was well worth it, and the views up here are insane! There is plenty of space to chill out on a rock and enjoy your lunch, and I am not sure I have had a better view for lunch! The clear water, the silence, the towering mountains, and the breathtaking colors prove why this is one of British Columbia’s most popular hikes!

Some essential tips for navigating Joffre Lakes.

The journey

Vancouver Airport is a major international hub, and when you arrive, you will be 25 minutes by train from downtown. If you are picking up a hire car, expect to add another hour to your journey if you are heading to Whistler or Pemberton. The Sea to Sky Highway towards Squamish is the road you need.

As mentioned previously, you will need to plan to get to the parking lot early for your hike, and the easiest way to do this is by staying in Pemberton.

ESim or SIM card providers

In Canada, I would stick with the ESim option as phone plans are silly expensive here; I use GigSky, which you can order here. They offer very competitive rates with popular perks such as free use of 100 in an emergency, no internet required to update your app with a new plan, and customer service options if you need to talk to someone.

Language

English is the main language; however, if you speak French or Mandarin, you can find tour operators who could help with this type of trip in Vancouver.

Summary of Joffre Lakes

Dreamy, stunning, breathtaking, and serene are just some of the words I would use to describe this place.

There is a reason it is one of the most popular places in British Columbia as the views make this hike worth the toil.

I also agree with the limit on the number of people who can visit the park during the peak months.

Vancouver and Canada suffer from overtourism with everything being booked out months in advance.

When we last visited, there were no rules like this for Joffre Lakes, and something had to be done to keep the area secure and thriving.

Nowadays, this hike requires patience, organization and luck with the daily passes, but once you pass this hurdle, you make memories which will last a lifetime.

If you are heading to Vancouver, add this to your itinerary and get your hiking boots on, as your camera needs to experience all these tremendous colours and sounds which accompany you when you sit on those rocks at Upper Joffre Lake.
