Washington Park Amphitheatre in Portland

Washington Park Amphitheatre in Portland

Welcome to the City of Roses! Whether it's been a few years or just a few months since your last visit, Portland always has something new and exciting to offer.

This vibrant, eclectic city constantly evolves, with fresh attractions, updated travel tips, and hidden treasures waiting to be discovered.

In this guide, I will take you beyond the well-trodden paths and introduce you to the latest must-see spots, insider secrets, and local favourites that make Portland an endlessly fascinating destination.

Our last visit was in the Fall of 2019, and little did we know that this would be one of the last times we would visit the USA because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

That would be our penultimate trip before the lockdown, and at that point, like most people, we almost took travel for granted.

Since then, we have been itching to return and see this quirky, fabulous city.

Late last year, I booked tickets to TravelCon, so I was visiting anyway, but I decided to stay for the long weekend to check out some favourite haunts and new spots.

Get ready to explore Portland again and uncover the surprises that keep this city unique and unforgettable!

Top Attractions in Portland

If you are visiting for the first time, the list below includes all the main attractions—these are the ones I visited, too!

I felt compelled to revisit some attractions as the last time I was in Portland, the weather was pretty dreary so I needed that new memory with the glorious sunshine I had for the weekend.

1. Washington Park

International Rose Test Garden: With thousands of rose varieties, this garden is a picturesque spot that offers beautiful views of the city.

Portland Japanese Garden: A serene and meticulously maintained garden that provides a peaceful escape from the urban environment.

  • Tip: You can visit NW 23rd Avenue, a trendy area, which is a bus or tram ride away from downtown. From here, it is a short 20-minute walk into Washington Park. There is a little bit of uphill, so make sure you wear some comfortable walking shoes.

  • Thoughts: I am so glad I went back. It started to rain as we walked up, but we had glorious sunshine by the time we got to the International Rose Test Garden. The amphitheatre is a must in the park; you can sit there with your lunch and chill out in the fantastic greenery. We spent an hour or two walking around the park and enjoying the sun. A gem in the city!

2. Powell's City of Books

Powell's City of Books, located in the heart of downtown Portland, is an iconic and sprawling independent bookstore that has become a beloved landmark for both locals and visitors. Often referred to as the largest independent bookstore in the world, Powell's occupies an entire city block and boasts over a million new, used, and rare books spread across multiple floors and nine colour-coded rooms.

  • Tip: Try to go during the day on a weekday, as this place can get super busy with long lines to buy books. There are so many rooms and options in this place that it can get overwhelming, so you will need some time to visit.

  • Thoughts: This was guaranteed when on my list of places to revisit in Portland; I mean, who doesn’t love books? However, I had a time limit, as you could spend all day in this place checking out every room and all the books on offer. We spent about an hour there in total, and I visited the travel section and bought a book on China. I would love to have a book in there one day!

3. NW 23rd Avenue

NW 23rd Avenue, often referred to as "Trendy Third," is one of Portland's most vibrant and popular streets, located in the Northwest District. This charming, tree-lined avenue is known for its eclectic mix of boutiques, restaurants, cafes, and historic architecture, making it a favorite destination for both locals and visitors.

  • Tip: Take the tram or bus 15 from Downtown, get off at the north, and work your way down before walking onto Washington Park.

  • Thoughts: I love this street. Trendy is my middle name, and this street has everything you need! I loved getting ice cream at Salt and Straw, lunch at Henry Higgins Boiled Bagels, marvelling at the Arcadia-style houses and dipping into the independent shops. There are so many options for lunch and coffee that you could spend a day here. It is a must-visit when in Portland and looking to venture outside of Downtown.

4. Portland Saturday Market

The Portland Saturday Market is a vibrant and bustling open-air market located in the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood, near the waterfront. Operating every Saturday from March through December, it’s one of the largest continuously operating outdoor markets in the United States.

  • Tip: The obvious one is to plan to visit Portland on a Saturday, but be prepared to buy all sorts of quirky and unique souvenirs. You can even get some great food here!

  • Thoughts: This was my first time visiting the Saturday Market, and we found it by chance. As we walked along the river, we saw numerous stalls, and this market is enormous! I bought a cool, handcrafted pack of cards for the Oregon Coast to reminisce about our trip there last year. You get to know the locals when visiting a market, so try to add it to your itinerary!

5. Pearl District

The Pearl District is one of Portland's most dynamic and trendy neighborhoods, known for its blend of industrial history, artistic culture, and modern urban living. Located just northwest of downtown, the Pearl District has undergone a dramatic transformation from a former warehouse and industrial area to a vibrant, upscale community.

  • Tip: Visit this place during the day and during the evening to experience both sides of this transformed area.

  • Thoughts: This was new to us, and we only visited during the day, but I loved walking around the streets. A lot of cities now have this type of area, like the famous one in Copenhagen, where it used to be a meat packing area. The Pearl District is situated Downtown, and there is a lot of art to see as you walk around. Before heading back, we dipped into a cafe for coffee and a souvenir shop to buy some last-minute items.

6. Portland Aerial Tram

The Portland Aerial Tram is a unique and iconic transportation system that connects the South Waterfront district to the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) campus on Marquam Hill. Opened in December 2006, the tram is not only a practical means of transit but also a popular attraction offering stunning views of the city and its surroundings.

  • Tip: Bring your camera, as you will get stunning views of Portland when you reach the top. I would also advise people who are not comfortable with cable cars not to indulge, as the cable car can swing about a tad.

  • Thoughts: A favourite activity of mine is accessible by tram from Downtown. If you love a view and a cable car then this is the activity for you! This is free for people who work at the hospital, but for tourists, this will cost you $8 in return. However, the views are breathtaking!

Voodoo Doughnut

Voodoo Doughnut is an iconic and quirky doughnut shop located in downtown Portland, Oregon, renowned for its creative and indulgent treats, eclectic decor, and offbeat charm.

I left this entry out above as I wanted to clump it with the brunch, and this iconic spot is perfect for a snack. We got caught in a downfall, and the donuts even survived the rain, so they must be waterproof!

No, seriously, there are so many options and flavours to choose from you won’t be disappointed when you dive into some doughy sweety goodness.

My top three favourite cafes for coffee

Coffee is always on the agenda for my trips, and Portland was no exception.

We had a list of cafes we wanted to visit for coffee, so let’s delve into them!

1. Flour Bloom

Flour Bloom Cafe is a charming and cozy cafe located in Portland, Oregon, known for its delightful pastries, artisanal coffee, and welcoming atmosphere.

This is located near the Portland Convention Center, a tram ride away from the main downtown area. I absolutely loved the coffee's taste and the cafe's decor. It gave me a ‘60s vibe, and that is my jam! What a find!

2. Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Stumptown Coffee Roasters is a renowned coffee roasting company based in Portland, Oregon. It is known for its exceptional-quality coffee beans, commitment to sustainability, and influential role in the specialty coffee movement.

This is a favorite of ours in the Northwest Pacific. They bailed us out after a not-so-successful coffee experience in another cafe. It was great to be back with a trusty, tasty coffee!

3. St. Honoré Bakery

St. Honoré Bakery, named after the French patron saint of bakers and pastry chefs, is a charming bakery located in Portland, Oregon. It specializes in traditional French pastries, bread, and desserts.

A one-minute walk from Hotel Lucia and situated on NW 23rd Avenue, this trendy little cafe serves excellent coffee and pastries, which I love! When a local told me they are one of the best in Portland, it made me feel great about my choice.

Some essential tips for navigating around Portland.

Transport

Portland has great links in the city to get around, such as the Max Light Rail, Portland Streetcar, TriMet buses, and the Aerial Tram. You can use your credit or debit card to tap on these services, so no cash is needed. Take the blue or red line Max Light Rail from the airport, which will take you to Downtown Portland.

You can rent a car using my Discovery Cars affiliate link here, to visit other places around Portland like Cannon Beach, Tillamook, Columbia River Gorge or the inner city areas of the city of Portland.

ESim or SIM card providers

In the USA, several top SIM card providers offer extensive coverage, reliable service, and various plans to suit different needs. Verizon Wireless boasts excellent coverage nationwide, especially in rural areas, while AT&T provides fast and reliable LTE and 5G coverage with perks like HBO Max. Consider coverage, data plans, pricing, and additional perks to choose the best provider for your needs.

If you are looking for an ESim option, I use GigSky, which you can order here. They offer very competitive rates with popular perks such as free use of 100 in an emergency, no internet required to update your app with a new plan, and customer service options if you need to talk to someone.

Summary of my return to Portland

What a difference five years make!

Since the last time I visited in 2019, we have had a pandemic; I have become a resident of Canada, I started a travel podcast and YouTube channel, Lionel Messi won the World Cup, and Ipswich Town has been promoted to the Premier League!

But one thing has stayed the same: Portland is still awesome!

This is one of my favorite cities in the USA.

It is quirky, unique, and unlike many other cities in the country.

Known for its beer craft scene, there are plenty of breweries to visit, which I didn’t even mention in the blog as I am not a big drinker of alcohol.

The coffee and food scene is exceptional!

The locals are honest and love their city. One server gave me complimentary tea but forgot to give me cutlery for my meal. She was so funny!

One thing about this place is the community. People love to stick together, help each other out, and try to fix the city's problems, like the Opioid crisis, which you will see firsthand in Chinatown.

From wandering through the eclectic neighborhoods and enjoying the local food scene to exploring the natural beauty of the surrounding areas, my time in Portland was filled with memorable moments.

Whether browsing the aisles of Powell's City of Books or savoring the delicious offerings at food carts and restaurants, Portland offers a unique blend of culture, nature, and culinary delights.

I should return to Portland to rediscover its ever-evolving food scene, explore more of its charming neighborhoods, and immerse myself in the laid-back atmosphere and friendly community that make Portland a city worth revisiting time and time again.

Overall, it is a place that has my heart, and I would never say no to returning to Portland.
