A 7-Day Itinerary in Taiwan: Exploring Taipei and Kaohsiung

Lotus Pond in Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Welcome to my short and sweet Taiwan adventure!

I'm super excited to take you on a journey through Taiwan in this blog.

Over the next seven days, I'll be exploring the vibrant cities of Taipei and Kaohsiung, discovering their top attractions. From the iconic Taipei 101 and the spiritual Longshan Temple to the bustling Shilin Night Market and the busy Ximending, Taipei has so much to offer.

Then, I'll head south to Kaohsiung, where we'll visit the stunning Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, Lotus Pond, and the Pier 2 Project.

Our seven-day trip was magical. We checked out awesome night markets to try the famous street food of Taiwan. This episode includes a lot of coffee, temples, memorials, lakes, and views.

I have covered all the bases in this one. We even managed to get into a favorite Japanese haunt for lunch one day; thanks, Coco!

The bullet train was a dream to ride on as we traveled south, and it is an experience you should have once you are there.

Who doesn't want to travel at 300km per hour?

This video has great hostel options if you want a cheaper option in both cities. I even chuck in a few Western brunch places to keep the vultures at bay.

Whether you are planning your own trip to Taiwan or just love travel adventures, this guide has something for everyone.

Let's go on a journey!

Top Attractions in Taipei

In total, we had five days in Taipei and tried to get as much in as we could; here were some of my favorites.

1. Taipei 101

Visit Taipei 101, Taiwan's iconic skyscraper and the former tallest building in the world. Enjoy breathtaking views from the observation deck and explore the upscale shopping mall and fine dining options.

  • Tip: Be sure to book in advance, which we didn’t do. The earliest we could get a time was 11 a.m., which wasn’t the plan, but we adapted and went for brunch instead. It's a hard life, huh?

  • Thoughts: It's a tad pricey at 600 Taiwanese Dollars per person, but you get to visit the previous tallest building in the world (see here for the tallest!) and now the fastest lift in the world. Great views of Taipei; make sure you visit on a clear day. I did thoroughly enjoy the experience, but then I am a sucker for tall buildings with views.

2. Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall

Explore the grand Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, dedicated to Taiwan's former president. This historical site features beautiful architecture, lush gardens, and an impressive statue of Chiang Kai-Shek.

  • Tip: This place is huge, so make sure you have your walking shoes on and you have enough time. There is a lot of history and information to read about Taiwan. The gardens and buildings are fantastic and are in the classic East Asian style.

  • Thoughts: I wish we had more time here. We were pushed by leaving it to the last day and the thunderstorm threat, so we had to get on with seeing the whole site. I think this is a must if you want to learn about the history of Taipei and Taiwan, which is often covered in the news.

3. Shilin Night Market

Experience the vibrant Shilin Night Market, Taipei's largest and most famous night market. Indulge in delicious street food, shop for unique souvenirs, and soak in the lively atmosphere.

  • Tip: We went in June, and it was so hot. Bring a towel and some tissues so you can be comfortable eating your street food. The next tip is simple: try everything or as much as possible!

  • Thoughts: We loved visiting. There are so many stalls for food or other products to buy. We even purchased a fan as I was sweating a lot when walking around. I tried a beef pie, fried mushrooms, potato balls, and pineapple with cheese. You need to get stuck in and not even think about it; just order and eat away.

4. Longshan Temple

Discover the spiritual heart of Taipei at Longshan Temple, one of the city's oldest and most revered temples. Admire the intricate architecture and join the locals in traditional worship rituals.

  • Tip: Be respectful once inside the temple; be aware that people are praying and you are there to visit. Avoid as many photos or videos if you are a creator.

  • Thoughts: Who doesn’t love a temple? I understand that when traveling in Asia, you can see too many temples and not appreciate their presence. So we ensured that we did a full day’s sightseeing before walking over to Longshan, which was so peaceful. It is a must in Taipei.

5. Ximending

Stroll through Ximending, Taipei's bustling shopping and entertainment district. This trendy area is known for its fashion boutiques, street performers, and vibrant nightlife.

  • Tip: I have no shame in recommending this, but for lunch, we went to Coco Ichiban, a Japanese chain serving classic Japanese curries and dishes. It is right in the heart of Ximending, and I love it.

  • Thoughts: You should visit in the evening to see the transition from day to night, giving you a different vibe. At night, this place is buzzing! We loved walking around the shops and stalls and checking out the night market. It's a great place if you are young and looking for a party! This area has everything!

Staying two nights in Kaohsiung

We decided to visit another city in Taiwan, so we chose Kaohsiung, a ninety-minute journey south to the coast.

The ticket can be easily purchased at the main train station in Taipei and costs around CAD 100 for the return journey. You will then board a super cool bullet train that travels 300km an hour. What an experience!

We had no real plan but to book a hostel and check out the city.

Let’s get into the details below.

Top Attractions in Kaohsiung

1. Lotus Pond

Stroll around Lotus Pond, a picturesque man-made lake dotted with beautiful temples, pagodas, and sculptures. It's a peaceful spot to enjoy nature and learn about local religious practices.

  • Tip: Take a hat and a towel, as this pond is a 45-minute loop, and we were in extreme heat and humidity, which caused a lot of sweat! Don’t worry, however, as plenty of places to chill out in the shade or refreshment stops along the trail.

  • Thoughts: This is a great free activity with awesome pond views. The colours are unique, and there are many places to visit along the trail, such as the Temple of Confucius and the Pagodas (see below). There are transport links around the pond, so if you have had enough, you can take a metro station to return to town.

2. Dragon and Tiger Pagodas

Visit the iconic Dragon and Tiger Pagodas at Lotus Pond. Enter through the dragon's mouth and exit through the tiger's mouth for good luck while enjoying the vibrant murals and beautiful views of the pond.

  • Tip: Take a step back to photograph this part of the pond with the lotus plants surrounding the pagoda. It’s a magical shot!

  • Thoughts: A great way to break up the journey on the pond and fantastic art and structures! Be sure to get that good luck!

3. Pier-2 Art Center

Immerse yourself in contemporary art at the Pier-2 Art Center, a repurposed warehouse district showcasing innovative art installations, galleries, and cultural events. A must-visit for art lovers and creatives.

  • Tip: Give yourself enough time to explore the individual shops, art galleries, and events. Check the calendar to see what is happening while you are there.

  • Thoughts: We loved this place and should have spent more time there. This area has a metro station, so you can get to it fairly quickly; however, our line was twenty minutes away. This is the place for you if you want super cool independent businesses thriving. There are great coffee, brunch, drinks, and dinner options here. I wish we had gone back in the evening.

4. Liuhe Night Market

Experience the bustling Liuhe Night Market, one of Kaohsiung's most famous night markets. Savor delicious street food, shop for unique items, and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

  • Tip: Pick random stalls, order, and taste the market's delights. One of the best things to do in Taiwan! If you need a vegan option, there is a restaurant called Yé Shū, which is like a diner but has fabulous Western food.

  • Thoughts: We didn’t find too many vegan options here, but for people who are vegetarians or meat eaters, this place is a dream. There is so much choice, and it can be pretty overwhelming, like the Shiling Market. Get stuck in, and don’t worry about the time—soak it all in!

5. Love River

Take a romantic boat ride along the Love River, Kaohsiung's charming waterway. Enjoy the scenic views, riverside parks, and vibrant nightlife along the riverbanks.

  • Tip: These little streets with cafes, restaurants, and shops are just off the main riverwalk. We found an excellent cafe for ice cream, coffee, and dog cuddles. Do you know what the annoying thing is? I don’t remember the name of it, so it is not the best tip, but get off the main path to find these little gems.

  • Thoughts: This is a lovely walk along the river, which is accessible on the knees and a joy with views of Kaohsiung.

A coffee recommendation in Kaohsiung?

Sunny Day Roaster Coffee

They have changed locations since we left Taiwan; more information can be found here.

This cafe offered options only in Mandarin, and English wasn’t widely spoken, so you will need to learn some coffee-related words and sentences to get your order in. However, the coffee tasted great!

It has a super trendy feel and a lovely space to read a book or chill with friends.

Some essential tips for navigating around Taiwan.

Transport

When you arrive at Taipei airport, purchase a travel card, which can be used throughout Taiwan. This can be bought once and then topped up as you go at the stations. More information on it can be found here. The train from the airport goes directly into downtown Taipei.

Taipei and Kaohsiung have great metro systems, which are easy to navigate and allow you to explore the cities.

ESim or SIM card providers

In Taiwan, I would stick with the ESim option; I use GigSky, which you can order here. They offer very competitive rates with popular perks such as free use of 100 in an emergency, no internet required to update your app with a new plan, and customer service options if you need to talk to someone.

Language

English is spoken widely in Taipei, with signs in both Mandarin and English. However, the staff at restaurants spoke little English, so I would advise learning a few phrases to make it easy on yourself. Your backup can be Google Translate.

However, We felt that in the south of the country, English was not spoken that much, with signs only in the local language. Be prepared to navigate this in coffee shops, restaurants, shops, and in your accommodation.

Summary on Taiwan

We loved our time in Taiwan. There is so much more to see on the Western side, with more cities and towns to explore, and then there is the Eastern side, with much more nature and smaller settlements.

You might not see many restaurant recommendations in this blog, and that is because most nights, we ate at the street markets, whether they were the bigger ones or the smaller ones.

You can find street markets in almost any area around Taipei and Kaohsiung, which is super cool—there are so many options!

The people were super friendly, and the vibe of the country we visited was positive; many people enjoyed themselves, being around friends and loving the outside culture.

This place needs time, but if you are between countries like Thailand and South Korea and want a fantastic place to stop off, this would be a great place to check out.

It is a very budget-friendly place for backpackers, as the hostels are reasonably priced and the street food is cheap.

If you don’t want to budget for the bullet train, there are reliable buses to get you around the country.

Overall, it is an amazing place to visit, and it enhanced my love for Asia and, more specifically, East Asia even more!
